Lilongwe Water Board (LWB) would like to inform all its valued customers that following the on-set of the 2016/2017-rain season, water production to meet drinking standards is below the required capacity due to heavy siltation. This is usually the case with the first rains whereby the run-off brings with it heavy sediments that lodge at the intake reservoir. The sediments comes from the erosion of the bare catchment caused by wanton cutting of trees, poor agricultural practices and livelihood activities such as sand mining on the Lilongwe River banks. In spite of LWB’s efforts to manage wide variety of environmental issues, there has been an unprecedented increase to the sediment load for the past 10 years. The sediment lodging at the intake reservoir has also brought about a rapid reduction in the storage capacity of the reservoir in the past few years. The first rains also wash the sediment along, further causing challenges in the treatment process. However, the Board expects the situation to come under control after a few weeks of the rainfalls. Meanwhile, a limited Rationing Program has been commissioned. The Board regrets any inconvenience that this may cause. MANAGEMENT
